Ours are carved from a single piece of solid Thai granite, (the same natural stone that was traditionally used for making grinding millstones), given a deluxe finish and would satisfy the recommendations of the two chefs above.
		There is no doubt that if you want fabulous flavours and strong aromas, you need to grind your own herbs and spices, just before they are added to a recipe. When we crush the microscopic cell walls of fresh herbs or spices, all of the flavour is released. Chopping and cutting just doesn't break down anything like the number of cells and so the flavour and aroma is less intense. Our pestle and mortars are made from dark grey-green solid authentic Thai granite. There are three sizes available, dependent on amount of spice you need to crush. The Large size is powerful enough to take make short work of good quantities of fresh herbs or spices. The pestles are ground smooth and feel comfortable to hold. The one with the Large mortar is 19cm (7½") long with a lacquered holding surface. The mortars have a natural rough-hewn exterior, which has been lacquered to show off the beautiful granite at its best. It really is an attractive kitchen ornament. The mortar's interior is ground smooth (and in unlaquered) to mate with the pestle. The Large mortar has a considerable capacity of about 600ml, is 12.5 cm (5") high and has an external diameter of 18cm (7"). The Medium mortar has a capacity of 350ml, is 10cm (4") high and has an external diameter of 15cm (6"). Its pestle is 15.5cm (6") long. The Small mortar has a capacity of 225ml, is 8cm (3") high and has an external diameter of 12.5cm (5"). Its pestle is 13cm (5") long. These are beautiful, deluxe quality heavy duty mortars and pestles, at a remarkable price. With normal care, they will last a lifetime and, like Jamie's, will become your "couldn't do without" product.
